B+W Filters

Founded in Berlin by Bormann and Weber, hence the name B+W, this precision optical company has been making

high quality filters and associated products since 1947. Their merger in 1985 with the world renowned Jos. Schneider

Optics has enable the company to explore even more ways to produce the perfect filter for high quality lenses,

be they digital or analogue.

The B+W Difference

Most other filter manufacturers start with ordinary window glass that has been poured in thin sheets and cooled quickly,

introducing internal flaws. B+W filters, on the other hand, start with a cylinder of Schott German optical glass from which

the filters are diamond cut, precision ground and then polished to ensure flatness on both surfaces and uniform thickness

throughout.

This process is used by the world’s leading lens makers and B+W but very rarely by other filter manufacturers.

It reduces unwanted reflection and lens flare, which can seriously degrade the image contrast and resolution.
Most filters are coated with the new Multi Resistant Coating (MRC) method developed by B+W

which provides greater durability and scratch resistance than the previous multi-coating process.
Finally B+W filters are mounted in a matte black, corrosion-free brass ring, further reducing surface reflections and
minimizing distortion or binding of the filter to the lens, even during rapid temperature changes.
After all this each filter must pass manual as well as automated tests to ensure that each and every one that leaves
the factory meets their critical standards.

B+W UV, Skylight and Colour Correction Filters

B+W UV 010

Ultraviolet light, which manifests itself in photographs as reduced clarity and the appearance of haze, is blocked by the UV 010.
Ultraviolet light is invisible to the eye and is strong in mountainous and coastal areas with very clear air.
This makes the colourless UV 010 an indispensable filter because it requires no exposure compensation.
It is recommended as an ideal filter to be kept permanently on the lens to protect the front element.

B+W Polarising Filters

B+W Circular Polariser

This filter is specially designed to be used with auto-exposure and auto-focus SLR and video cameras.

It does not influence the metering systems of these cameras. Filter factor is 2.3 to 2.8.

B+W Käsemann Circular Polariser

This high-quality polariser is crafted from select polariser foils and specially prepared optical glass.
This neutral polariser is edge sealed and therefore, it is durable under extreme climatic conditions.
The use of this filter is recommended for the most stringent imaging requirements,
especially with fast telephoto lenses and Apochromatic lenses.

Filter factor is 2.3 to 2.8.

B+W Neutral Density Filters

B+W ND102

By using this filter, it is possible to use the relatively longer shutter speeds while retaining a wide aperture even

in bright illumination. This allows for the emphasis of the subject by controlling depth of field or creating motion

effect with subject blur.
Filter factor is 4.

B+W  ND103 (Special order only)

This filter is denser than 102 and more light absorbing. It is suited for video, especially when a small enough lens

opening is not available. In addition, a specific depth of field limit can be obtained.
Filter factor is 8.

B+W  ND106

This filter is especially useful when making extremely long exposures (several minutes). It is also suited for video.

Filter factor is 64.

B+W  ND110

This filter is useful for the observation and documentation of industrial processes at high temperatures and light levels.

This type of filter prevents strong flare and brings out interesting details. Ideal for digital photography.
Filter factor is 1000. Click here for more information on Scotts Blog

B+W Filters for Black & White Photography

B+W 022 medium yellow [8]

This filter creates subtle differences between green tones and enhances the natural rendition of the sky.
It is recommended for landscape and foliage photography. It tones down skin blemishes and ruddiness
in daylight portraits, and results in soft skin tones as well as intensified blond hair.
Filter factor is approx. 2.

B+W 040 yellow-orange [16]

This bright-orange filter darkens blue and violet as well as green and yellow-green.
It is indispensable for all landscape and architectural photography which require vivid and clear contours.
The sky is distinctly toned with the clouds clearly contrasted against it.
This filter is popular for nude photography under natural light. Filter factor is approx. 4.

B+W 041 red-orange [22]

This filter creates a strong darkening of the sky, dramatic storm-like cloud reproduction
and strongly enhanced shadows due to its enhanced contrast. It also achieves good tonal
differentiations in still-life photography by brightening yellow, orange, and red. Filter factor is approx. 4.0.

B+W 090 light red [25]

This filter is ideal for enhancing contrast. In landscape and architectural photography,
it enhances white areas, for example, letting clouds stand out clearly against a darkened sky
and drastically reducing distant haze. It is also used for tonal separation in still-life photography.
Filter factor is approx. 5.

B+W Infrared Filters

B+W 092

This dark red filer is for black and white infrared films and filters at light below approximately 650nm.

It allows pictures of a pure red image while making good use of the relatively low sensitivity of infrared films.

Filter factor is approx. 20-40.

B+W 093 (Special Order)

This black infrared filter will filter out the entire visible spectrum. It is used with black and white infrared films

with sensitivity up to 1000nm. Filter factor is determined by the film sensitivity.

B+W Graduated Filters

B+W Graduated 502 neutral density

This filter has a reduction of 2 f-stops due to its 25% transmission factor.
Mainline Photographic experts, like most professional photographers
recommend only the B+W #502 for best results.
